IT Intern

About Riverford

We’re mad about organic veg. It’s at the core of everything we do. We love to grow it, pack it into boxes and deliver it to customers’ doorsteps around the UK. This takes a lot of brilliant people, with a range of skills and knowledge.
Riverford began in 1986, with a few acres of veg, a wheelbarrow and a beaten up 2CV for deliveries. We’ve grown into a successful e-commerce business, with four farms, three packhouses, a fleet of vans and drivers, a wholesalers, butchery, organic restaurant and pub. We employ people across many areas including IT, Logistics, Sales, HR, Finance and Marketing (and more besides).

Our culture and values set us apart from other businesses. Riverford is a friendly, informal place to work, with a passionate, entrepreneurial spirit. We’re committed to providing a fair deal for growers, customers and staff.

What you’ll be doing

Riverford is no ordinary business. We put ethics before profits, people ahead of processes, and our products are our passion. We grow, pack and deliver millions of meals every month up and down the country. Technology is at the core of everything we do; web, mobile, production, logistics, farming, and everything in between. We build complex systems in small, agile teams with modern tools.

Following a very successful start to our internship programme last year we are on the hunt for a bright individual who is ready to challenge themselves and spend 3 months working as part of the team, delivering real business value.

Our ideal candidate is someone who has an obsession with developing software and solving problems. Someone who is excited by technology and the opportunities it creates for businesses and who has a desire to build great user experiences.
Our internship provides an opportunity to work at the cutting edge of software development with technologies like: Clojure; Docker; Node.js; PHP 7; Amazon Web Services; react.js; GitLab and more.
In addition, you will learn:
• About the full software development lifecycle from requirements to delivery
• What is required to create compelling user experiences
• Software build automation and infrastructure automation skills
• Manual and automated software testing practices
This is a 3 month fixed term contract, 40 hours a week. Based at Wash Barn, Buckfastleigh, Devon, TQ11 0JU

Skills & experience

We don’t really mind about the experience you come with. Ideally you will have a natural aptitude for IT and technology and it will be helpful if you are studying towards some sort of related qualification. What’s most important is your attitude and desire to learn and develop. We will give you a technical test as part of the recruitment process which will help us to assess your strengths and level of understanding.
Personal qualities
Hopefully you will be excited about getting to learn more about our technology and systems. Good communication skills will definitely help, not only with working as part of a team but also interacting with the wider business. Things change quickly at Riverford so an ability to adapt and flex is important along with some strong analytical, problem solving skills.

Circa £16,000 per annum

Riverford is a beautiful place to work, with lots of great people – and other benefits too. We offer 31 days’ holiday PRO RATA (including bank holidays). We love food and hope you do too, so we give staff 25% off everything we sell on our website; heavily discounted organic breakfasts and lunches in the staff canteen; and free organic fruit and veg. There are also many social events for staff, with two big parties a year.
