Development Manager - Darlington
We are looking for a technically minded Development Manager, who can demonstrate strong leadership skills and has experience of leading on-site and remote development teams across multiple development languages.

The Role

The Development Manager will ensure the quality and timeliness of the development output, whether delivered using internal developer resource or external agency resource. Leading and managing a team of developers and assuring the quality of the development output.

You will lead all development activity, assign and co-ordinate work to the team; you will provide guidance, frameworks and principles to other colleagues engaged in development activity and they will ensure that the development output is aligned closely with the requirements originating in the IT strategy and overall business strategy.

You will work closely with project and programme managers to co-ordinate their development resources for projects. You & the team will work closely with IT colleagues to ensure that the development output is carried out according to business-driven specifications, is fully tested, and is released to production using repeatable and robust methods. You will have budget and financial management responsibilty and manage any 3rd party development partners alongside current business project managers. Maintaining the high quality standards for the customer is the ultimate success measure for this role.

What you will do…

* Part of the IT management team, working together with colleagues and overall responsibility for development.

* Contribute to the design and ongoing execution of the IT strategy.

* Ownership of the development strategy including principles, framework, strategies, and standards.

* Engaging managers and leaders across all areas of the business creating strong business relationships.

* Ownership of the development roadmap, giving clear guidance to colleagues about sequencing, resource availability, task and effort expenditure, working with matrix managers as needed.

* Leading the assessment of new development languages, tools, frameworks and methodologies, to ensure that the development output is aligned with strategy and resources.

* Takes full responsibility for the management of all development activities within programmes/projects and BAU, combining effort with IT staff and the wider internal/external teams.

* Ensure all aspects of work meet specified requirements, customer expectations and quality standards.

* Provides authoritative advice and guidance to colleagues on any aspect of development.

* Willingness to travel to other locations based on project requirements, specifically including Reading.

* Management of developers based on and off-site

What you will bring…

* Knowledge of any Agile development methodology based on iterative development, such as Scrum Certification

* Certified Scrum Master

* Microsoft Certified Solutions Developer

* TOGAF certified

* Multi-year experience of leading development teams across multiple development languages.

* Track record of delivering development projects to agreed business specifications, including cross team/department challenges, changing requirements and schedule changes.

* Experience of leading a team containing individuals with different levels of experience.

* Sound knowledge of .NET/ C#, with understanding of Visual Studio Team Services.

* Experience of front end web development frameworks.

* Experience of working with enterprise grade systems (SAP, Oracle, Salesforce, Infor, AX, CRM etc).

* Excellent understanding of the entire software development lifecycle.

* Exposure to cloud or cloud hybrid integration patterns and methodologies (such as Azure, commercial 3rd party iPaaS solutions, or ESB technology within enterprise grade systems).

* Clear understanding of business case principles.

* Excellent communication and relationship development skills – including senior stakeholder engagement.

* Excellent problem solving and analytical skills.

* Knowledge of application architecture principles.

* Experience of continuous integration / continuous delivery.

* Understanding of the cultural and practical meaning of the term DevOps.

* Experience working closely with infrastructure teams.
